Dear parish family,
Happy New Year! I know, it’s not January 1st yet. But in the Church, we begin the new liturgical year on this first week of Advent. In today's readings and the gospel, we find a common theme. Did you catch it? "Stay awake!" This is a good reminder as we begin the new liturgical year. It's time to get up, shake off the spiritual sleepiness, and embrace a fresh start.
In today’s second reading, Saint Paul reminds us that salvation is nearer now. Advent is not just a countdown to Christmas. It’s a wake-up call. Paul speaks of “putting on the armor of light” and “putting on the Lord Jesus Christ.” Advent invites us to intentionally clothe ourselves in Christ-like living: honesty, purity, charity, forgiveness, and hope. This season is a chance to let God's grace illuminate our lives.
In the Gospel, Jesus says, “Stay awake, for you do not know on which day your Lord will come.” Jesus doesn’t give this warning to frighten us, but to keep us spiritually alert. The people in Noah’s time went about their daily lives unaware of what was coming. Jesus tells us not to make the same mistake. Be ready. Be attentive. Watch for the Lord’s presence. Not only in the future second coming, but in the quiet moments of every day.
So how do we begin this new liturgical year and prepare for Christmas?
First, I encourage you to wake up your prayer life.
Set aside dedicated time each day for silence, Scripture, and reflection. Even a few minutes can renew your heart.
Second, examine your heart. What needs “light” in your life right now? Where is God calling you to grow? Confession during Advent is a powerful way to start anew! We have several opportunities for confession during this Advent season. We have confessions at 3 pm every Saturday at our parish. Additionally, at Saint Mary’s in Chardon, we have a communal penance service on Dec 15th at 7 pm, 4-5 pm confessions on Dec 22nd, and 10-11 am confessions on Dec 23rd.
Third, let’s find Jesus’ presence in our daily lives. God comes to us in small and unexpected ways. Through people, challenges, and blessings. Stay alert to His presence. Let your life reflect the One you are preparing to welcome.
Brothers and sisters, as we begin this new liturgical year, may we truly stay awake, walk in the light, and prepare room in our hearts for Christ. May this Advent be a season of renewal, hope, and joyful expectation! You are in my prayers.
In Christ,
Fr. Fabian Han
